The Brunswick farmer’s market is now being held on Wednesdays from 4-7 p.m. This is a change from last year. The location is the same, but I haven’t had a chance to go this year so no current reports on it. Here are my comments from last year. Anyone else been this year and care to comment?

Rochelle, who writes an excellent blog Lots of Everything wrote a great comment to my last post. Since not everybody takes time to read the comments I thought I would post my response here.
Thank you for taking the time to write your comments. I agree totally with what you said. I would like to mention that I had a lengthy internal debate about naming the vendor. We really like Ridgefield Farms, enjoy their apples, the kids have been there and Mrs. F is friends with one of the owners, but in the end I strive to be honest and I realized that my reticence about naming them was solely due to my personal good feelings towards them.
I think it’s unreasonable to expect a vendor in such a small market to produce everything they sell. In this situation I’m glad they don’t: it makes commercial sense to have a range of produce to attract as many people as possible to a small market. I wouldn’t have cared if they had said some other farm in West Virginia, Virginia or North Carolina or whatever. (Just not Driscoll Farms in California- those things are awful!) I would’ve bought them anyway, but I was taken aback by what I perceived to be a less than honest answer. There’s no shame in selling someone else’s produce. However, one of the benefits in shopping farmer’s markets is that the vendors can tell you where their wares came from. It’s definitely not an unreasonable request.
As an aside Lowry’s Farm Stand about a ¾ mile up Rt. 17 in Brunswick grows none of the produce they sell. However the owner can always say exactly where it came from and in some instances when it was picked.
Stopped by the Brunswick farmer’s market briefly on Sunday. Seemed like a light crowd. Had a different meat purveyor from Boonsboro, but their bacon etc. all had nitrates in it. Also their beef was grain finished. I was really in the mood to cook something up, but there was not a whole lot of produce. Had a curious experience. We went to one (of the two) produce vendors, Ridgefield Farms. When asked where their strawberries came from the lady hesitated, then replied cryptically “we have a hothouse.” Now we were in a hurry to get to a Father’s Day function but upon reflection I found that answer almost Clintonesque, since she left the impression they grew the strawberries but didn’t actually say anything that could be held against them. I also wonder why in the world you would need a hothouse to grow strawberries in Maryland in June? Now Mrs F would say its just my naturally cynical nature, but once in North Carolina we had stopped at a roadside ‘farm stand’ to get some produce. I happened to wander around back and saw in their storage shed employees unloading boxes of produce with labels from all over the country. They were taking them out of the packages and putting them in their own. So ever since I have wondered.
Went to the Brunswick Farmers Market this Sunday. There were about nine vendors there and a fair amount of people milling about. Starting a farmers market must be hard and this looked like an decent start. Had the usual: strawberries, spinach and salad greens, some asparagus. Nice produce from Ridgefield Farm & Orchard (Shepherdstown). Look forward to seeing more of their stuff as the season progresses. Also really happy to see local honey and a meat purveyor. Talked to the meat guy for a while. On his farm, WoodTrail Graziers LLC (about 20 minutes away), he raises all his meat. Everything free range, no antibiotics, additives, artificial fertilizers etc. The beef is 100% grass fed. Pork from Tamworth pigs and pastured and the chicken is pastured in rotating enclosures. Purchased a frozen whole chicken from him for $3.50 a pound. Now what to do with it?
Also the Frederick News Post did a front page article on it. Its great to see things like this get the publicity. As its a little bit closer to stately Fred Manor than Frederick, I shall try to be a regular.
According to some buzz that I heard, and as noted on the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s website there is a new farmers market in Brunswick on Sundays from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. starting in June. Looking at the calendar that would be this Sunday. I think I will try to check it out this weekend. I’ll be sure to report what I find here if I do get a chance to go.
