Happy Anniversary to Me (again)

Well another year gone by and  Fred Foodie is now two years old.  It seems like just yesterday that I wrote my first Happy Anniversary post.  I also took this time last year to look at my goals for the blog.  I am sad to say that I didn’t really meet them.  On the plus side that just means that I can recycle them for this year!  Blogging was admittedly irregular, often the casualty of work and family, but the blog now has 145 published posts.  That averages to one post every 5.03 days.  Not bad if I do say so myself.  So here’s to year three!

Happy Anniversary- Part III: A Look Ahead

This is the last post in my anniversary extravaganza.  I wanted to let you know of some things I have planned for the blog.  New Year’s resolutions if you will.

1.  I want to increase the number of wine reviews.  As you may tell wine is my passion and I want to continue to highlight good values that are locally available.

2.  Winery reviews.  We are lucky here in Frederick to have a lot of local wineries.  I’d like to review some more and share with you the results.

3.  Restaurant reviews.  My goal is to do a minimum of one full restaurant review a month.  There are a lots of restaurants in the Frederick area that fly under the radar and you don’t hear much about.  Just like wine I want to see if I can uncover some more hidden gems.

4.  Lastly I want to launch a series of posts over the coming months that I think I’m going to call Drink Through Blogging.  This is inspired by my post on cook through blogging.  One of the questions posed in that post was what cookbook would you do? In thinking about it I decided that instead of doing recipes from a cookbook what I’d really love is to do is base it on a wine book.  Now if I could wave my magic wand I’d probably do Clive Coates’ Wines of Bourdeaux but that isn’t going to happen.  (2005 Chateau Le Pin is going for around $4000 right now!) so I have another book picked out.  If you have read this blog for a while you might be able to guess what it is.  I promise you that it should be fun and maybe even educational.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned!

Happy Anniversary- Part II: Things I learned

In reflecting back on my one year anniversary here are some things I learned in the first year of doing this.  Some of them may be blindingly obvious but here they are (in no particular order):

1.  Good writing is hard.  I can hear some of you crying saying ‘Fred what the heck do you know about good writing’ and you are probably right.  I spend a good portion of my work day writing, but its generally highly technical and filled with terms of art.  Writing well in plain English turned out to be surprisingly difficult.  Especially if I wanted to avoid using the same set of adjectives over and over.

2.  Writing about wine is even harder.    How do you convey taste to someone?  Often the wine is more than just a laundry list of flavors.  Besides flavors by themselves rarely paint the whole picture.  Which leads me to start thinking about how ridiculous rating systems are.  Do you rate wines on an absolute scale or in comparison with other wines from the same grape or region?  Shouldn’t a very good wine that costs $10 and come from a grape that gives some uncommon or interesting flavors  be rated higher than an excellent wine that is only one of among hundreds and costs $150?  I’ve been doing a lot of thinking (GEEK!) about rating systems lately. There is a blog out there that uses  pictures to rate wines.  Is this any less inscrutable than saying 88 or four stars?

3.  It may be the world WIDE web, but Frederick can be a very small place.  I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people.   One person even correctly guessed who I was!   I haven’t been confronted by a restaurateur yet, but I suppose it will happen.

4.  Lastly- this was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.  I enjoy writing and thinking about posts.  The comments from everyone are especially gratifying.  Keep them coming and I look forward to another year!
